Four letters, one syllable, so many meanings. Love.

I love my bed, family, friends, and gelato. I use the word several times a day. It’s a great way to express the release of endorphins, excitement, adoration, appreciation, among other feelings.

Mixing sex and the L-word just doesn’t seem right, though. Past experiences have proven this. Still, I’m a first date kind of girl; I like having fun.

I’ve been seeing this guy for a little more than three months. While he was out of town for work, he let me know he wanted to have a special, passionate night together when he got back into town. Okay. He was gone for two weeks.

Just a few hours earlier, we were talking on the phone. As I was about to hang up, but he stopped me.

“Wait.”
“Yeah?”
“I love you.”
I froze. What did I just hear? Umm. Three months. Uhh. I have to say something. Am I ready to say it out loud? Fuck. It’s been about 10 seconds.
“I…love you too.” Damn it. Too much lag time.
“I love you as a person, that doesn’t mean I’m in love with you.”
“Yeah, I know.”
“Okay, have a good night.”
“Mmkay. Bye.”

Yep, that’s how it went. Nice and awkward. At least it wasn’t during sex. That’s just trashy and unbelievable.

To make matters worse, a few days later, saying good night over the phone, he said it again. That time, I pretended I didn’t hear him and hung up quickly. He hasn’t said it again. I’ve decided not to address it unless he brings it up in person.

Being in terrible relationships in the past and using the L-word too soon has made me gun shy. Also, electively being single for three years makes the whole dating thing new and strange.
